One lesson my mum has always taught me is that there isn’t a problem that can’t be solved with a little fresh air. Every time I complain to her about feeling ill, or stressed, or overwhelmed, her first question is always: Have you been out of the house today? I also recently received a piece of advice: to get out of the house. Although this was meant in referral to work / business, I definitely apply this to my day to day life; Spending too much time inside the house is almost a metaphor for spending too much time inside of my own head. Just by going for a short walk I always feel calmer, and turning your focus from the internal to your external environment always helps distract me.
Just by getting out of the house and surrounding yourself by nature, greenery and other people does wonders for your mental health. Research has suggested that greenery and nature can not only improve your mood and reduce stress, but also improves your physical health and self-esteem. So next time your feeling low, give it a go!
Here’s some things I have tried:
- Going for a walk
- Walking your dog
- Go for a short run
- Run some errands
- Explore somewhere new
- Visit the park
Here’s some other things you can try:
- Do some gardening
- Grow some vegetables
- Go for a picnic
- Volunteer outdoors
- Discover a new outdoors hobby
Where’s your favourite green place to escape to?
